Polar Training - Winter

Polar regions have gained renewed interest as the centennial anniversaries of the great polar explorers approach. This has inspired many adventures to head to polar regions to embark on new and exciting expeditions.

Recognizing the growing need for polar training, Northwinds has opened a Polar Training Center in Iqaluit, on Baffin Island , in the Canadian Arctic. On Frobisher Bay we can offer ice conditions that one may encounter on an expedition to Greenland , the South or North Pole.

Course Description

The course is made up of 3 parts: The first 6 days focuses on skill & technique development. Inside workshops include Cold Weather Injuries, Clothing Systems, Nutrition, Communications and Sponsorship. For the afternoon workshops we head outside to perfect skiing techniques, navigation & route finding, kite skiing, and dog sledding. The second part is a 4 day mini expedition that pulls together and puts into practice “The Art of Polar Travel”. The third part is a 3 day final expedition where the group travels on their own, taking full responsibility for their own safety and travel. See Course Outline for details.

You must to be in good physical condition, as working hard in -40 C burns enormous amounts of energy. You will be expected to sleep out in tents the entire course, and on expedition pull a 50 to 80 kg. pulks (sled) for 6 to 8 hours a day.
